Before you get started with this course, make sure you are in a position to meet the following expectations. If you cannot, then this is not the course for you!
Effort and Time
This is a 3-credit course held during slightly shortened term (12 weeks), so you should expect to spend 10-12 hours per week, minimum, participating in the course. This is in agreement with the UAF Faculty Senate Guidelines for Computing Credit Hours.
Further, you will not be able to pass this course without working on it at least a few times per week. The time of day (or night) doesn’t matter, but you will not be able to meet the requirements for a passing grade if you expect to only be able to work on this course once a week or just before the given deadlines.
Because digital citizenship is tied to personal identity and investment, you will be required to do a significant amount of work and engage in a significant number of conversations in public (on the open web) using your real name. This is similar to activities like practicums and internships…you aren’t allowed to use a false name or wear a mask when doing those things either.
Sites and Accounts
WordPress Publishing Platform
For this course you will need access to a WordPress-based site on a custom domain (not a site on wordpress.com).
Please talk to me about your specific situation and needs BEFORE registering a domain or obtaining hosting services or anything else!
- If you already have such a site, as many students who are part of the ONID program will, you can use it for this course.
- If you don’t have one already, you will sign up for one as part of the first steps in the class. I strongly suggest using a shared hosting account with Reclaim Hosting ($30 for a year, including the domain name).
If this is all new to you, don’t worry, getting your site established is part of the activities during the first week of class!
You will be required to use Twitter as part of the basic participation requirements for this class.
We will be experimenting with Discourse for some class discussions.
You will need to make use of a variety of (no-cost) web services in order to complete various assignments as you go.
